Concrete Contractor in Folsom, CA

Concrete Should Add to the Home—Not Distract From It.

CJR builds custom concrete for Folsom homes and properties, combining thoughtful layout and finish selections with the preparation, drainage planning, and construction experience behind work that's built to perform.

BUILT FOR FOLSOM PROPERTIES

From a Blank Backyard to an Established Home

Folsom gives us very different starting points for concrete construction.

On newer properties, the backyard may still be relatively untouched. That's an opportunity to think ahead about the patio, walkways, pool decking, drainage, landscape, structures, utilities, and other improvements before permanent concrete starts determining what can go where.

On established properties, the questions are different.

There may already be a driveway, patio, pool deck, mature landscaping, drainage, walkways, retaining elements, or concrete that was installed years ago and no longer looks—or functions—the way it should.

In those situations, we're not only looking at what needs to be replaced. We're looking at whether the layout should be improved while we have the opportunity.

Whether we're starting from dirt or removing concrete that's been there for decades, the goal is the same: build it correctly for the property that's in front of us.

The Details Behind Quality Concrete

A strong, long-lasting concrete project starts with more than just a pour. From proper site preparation to thoughtful design and attention to drainage, we focus on the details that make all the difference.

DEMOLITION, REPLACEMENT + REDESIGN

Existing concrete does not always need to be recreated exactly as it was. When removing an older patio, walkway, driveway, or pool deck, we can evaluate whether the original layout still makes sense or whether the replacement creates an opportunity to improve circulation, drainage, usable space, or the overall relationship with the home.

DRAINAGE + ELEVATIONS

Concrete changes the way water moves across a property. Before construction, we consider finish elevations, slope, drainage paths, adjacent structures, landscape areas, and where water ultimately needs to go.

PROPER PREPARATION + CONSTRUCTION

The finished surface is only the portion you see. Excavation, base preparation, compaction, forming, reinforcement, thickness, drainage, joint placement, and proper placement practices all contribute to how the concrete performs after our crews leave.

CONCRETE FOR FOLSOM PROPERTIES

From newer homes with unfinished outdoor spaces to established properties with existing concrete and landscaping, Folsom projects require different approaches to planning and construction. We consider grading, drainage, access, existing improvements, and future outdoor plans to ensure the concrete is thoughtfully integrated with the home and surrounding property.

Experience Behind the Work

Concrete is not simply one of the services CJR added along the way.

Colton began working in residential concrete and landscape construction in his early teens before moving into commercial concrete in his early twenties. Those years expanded his experience into larger and more demanding construction environments involving crews, plans, schedules, safety, quality control, excavation, structural concrete, and field problem-solving.

From personally excavating large-scale elevator pits and structural footings to working atop high-rise buildings in Downtown Sacramento—forming, placing, and finishing structural concrete—those experiences helped shape the standards he carries into CJR today.

That construction background influences how we approach even the concrete homeowners may simply see as a finished patio or driveway.

DESIGNED WITH THE PROPERTY IN MIND

The Concrete Is Too Visible to Be an Afterthought.

Driveways, patios, walkways, steps, and pool decks can make up a significant amount of the visible space around a home.

When the concrete is done well, it feels intentional and complements everything around it.

When it isn't, it can become one of the first things you notice.

We've seen beautiful homes where uneven surfaces, inconsistent or splotchy finishes, poor transitions, uncontrolled cracking, or concrete that simply doesn't fit the architecture takes away from the property around it.

We believe the quality of the concrete should match the quality of the home.

That starts with design—layout, proportions, finish, borders, steps, transitions, surrounding landscape, and how one area connects to the next.

But just as importantly, it starts underneath the finished surface.

Excavation, grading, base preparation, compaction, reinforcement, forming, drainage planning, placement, control joints, and finishing all require experience and attention to detail.

For newer Folsom properties, we also think ahead. A future pool, pavilion, outdoor kitchen, landscape plan, or other improvement can influence decisions being made about permanent concrete today.

For established properties, removing older concrete gives us the opportunity to ask whether rebuilding exactly what was there is actually the best decision.

The right concrete elevates a home. The wrong concrete can become the first thing you notice.

A beautifully built home deserves concrete that reflects the same level of quality and craftsmanship.

Why Folsom Homeowners Choose CJR

Outdoor projects become much easier to manage when the company planning them understands more than one trade. Here's what sets the CJR experience apart.

One Team. Complete Outdoor Spaces.

We design and build pools, concrete, hardscape, outdoor living, landscape, drainage, and more—so every element works together from the beginning.

Family-Owned. Owner-Operated.

CJR is a family-owned and owner-operated company. You work directly with owner Colton Ray from the initial consultation through construction—there isn't a salesperson between you and the person responsible for the work.

Construction-First Approach

Our background in concrete, excavation, pools, and complete outdoor construction helps us anticipate challenges, plan properly, and consider how each part of the project affects the next.

Clear Communication

We want our clients to understand what they are building, what is included, how the project will be approached, and who is accountable for bringing it together.

Experience With New + Established Properties

Folsom concrete projects can start with completely different conditions—from newer properties where the outdoor space is still being developed to established homes with existing driveways, patios, pool decks, mature landscaping, drainage, and previous improvements. Our broader construction experience helps us understand what needs to happen now, what should be planned for later, and how the concrete fits into the property as a whole.

Quality You Can Count On

Our focus is thoughtful planning, proper preparation, quality craftsmanship, and doing the work correctly—not taking shortcuts to move a project along.

Colton and his team were EXCEPTIONAL in their work at our home. We had a big backyard of flat dirt and he helped turn it into a beautiful resort like feel.

Your Folsom Concrete Questions Answered

The Details That Matter

Concrete pricing involves much more than multiplying square footage by a standard number.

Demolition, excavation, access, grading, base preparation, reinforcement, concrete thickness, drainage, elevations, finish selections, steps, borders, retaining conditions, layout, and other site-specific requirements can all affect the scope.

There can also be a significant difference between pouring concrete on a newer property and removing and rebuilding around existing improvements.

We want to understand what we're building and what we're building on before giving you meaningful information about your project.

For larger projects, we'll also discuss your targeted comfort zone of investment so the proposed scope makes sense for what you're comfortable investing.

Ideally, before you've made too many permanent decisions about the backyard.

Folsom's newer communities south of Highway 50 can give homeowners an opportunity to plan outdoor improvements from the ground up.

Even if you're only ready to build the patio or other concrete now, tell us about the pool, pavilion, outdoor kitchen, landscape, lighting, or other features you may eventually want.

Future utilities, drainage, footings, sleeves, access, and elevations can all influence decisions being made today.

You don't have to build the entire backyard at once. You should know where you're headed before you permanently pour around it.

Not automatically.

If you're already removing an older patio, driveway, walkway, or pool deck, it's worth asking whether the original layout still makes sense.

Maybe the patio needs more usable space. Maybe the walkway has always felt awkward. Maybe the pool deck doesn't provide enough room where people actually gather. Or maybe several areas were added at different times and have never felt connected.

Replacement doesn't always have to mean replication.

Sometimes the existing layout is right and simply needs to be rebuilt properly. Other times, demolition creates an opportunity to make the property work better.

Because the finished square footage is only part of the scope.

Ask what's included for demolition, excavation, grading, base material, compaction, reinforcement, concrete specifications, drainage, forming, finish, control joints, steps, transitions, access, disposal, and site restoration.

Also look at what has been excluded or assumed.

Two contractors can quote the same approximate square footage while proposing very different work underneath and around the concrete.

Compare scope to scope—not simply price to price.

Very.

Homeowners naturally notice the finished surface first, but some of the most important work happens before the concrete truck arrives.

Excavation, grading, base preparation, compaction, reinforcement, forming, drainage planning, and the conditions underneath the slab can all affect the finished work.

Quality concrete starts long before the concrete is poured.

A beautiful finish doesn't make up for poor preparation underneath it.

Yes.

Existing concrete can be removed and the area reevaluated before the replacement is built.

That gives us the opportunity to look at the existing grades, drainage, transitions, surrounding landscape, access, and whether there are aspects of the original layout worth improving.

For an established Folsom home, the goal isn't simply to make the concrete look newer.

It's to make the new concrete feel appropriate for the home and work better for the property.

Depending on the project and site conditions, yes.

Adding or replacing concrete changes hard surfaces and can affect how water moves around the property.

We look at the relationship between the home, new concrete, existing grades, landscape, pools, structures, and surrounding improvements so drainage can be considered as part of the planning rather than after the concrete has already been installed.

Yes.

Concrete frequently needs to coordinate with pools and spas, landscape, drainage, irrigation, pavilions, outdoor kitchens, fire features, lighting, turf, putting greens, and other improvements.

Because CJR works across these areas, we can look at the concrete as part of the larger construction plan instead of treating it as an isolated project.

This is especially valuable when several permanent elements need to meet at the correct elevations and transitions.

Yes. Depending on the project and applicable plans or requirements, our concrete work can include foundations, footings, slabs, garage or shop slabs, ADU foundations and slabs, and concrete associated with outdoor structures.

These projects have different construction requirements than standard flatwork, so we evaluate the scope based on what is actually being built.

There isn't one finish that's right for every property.

Broom finish, colored concrete, stamped concrete, exposed aggregate, borders, and other finish details can create very different finished appearances.

We look at the architecture of the home, exterior materials, existing hardscape, surrounding landscape, how the area will be used, and how much visual attention you want the concrete itself to carry.

The finish should make sense with the property—not simply be selected because it's popular at the moment.

Not necessarily. Concrete is a rigid material, and some cracking can occur naturally as it cures and responds to temperature changes, moisture, soil movement, and other conditions.

However, the experience and preparation behind the concrete work matter significantly in helping reduce and control that cracking.

Proper ground preparation, compaction, reinforcement, forming, expansion and isolation measures where appropriate, concrete placement, finishing techniques, and properly planned control joints all play a role in how the concrete performs.

Control joints are intentionally placed to create weakened planes where shrinkage cracking is encouraged to occur in a more controlled location. Without the proper preparation and joint planning, cracking is more likely to develop in places you don't want it.

An experienced concrete contractor understands the measures that can be taken to reduce the potential for uncontrolled cracking and properly plans control joints to help manage where normal shrinkage cracking occurs.

No contractor can responsibly guarantee that concrete will never crack. But there is a big difference between acknowledging the natural characteristics of concrete and using that as an excuse for poor preparation or workmanship.

The goal is to give the concrete the best opportunity to perform the way it should—and that starts long before the concrete truck arrives.

Yes, whenever possible.

If you know you eventually want a pool, pavilion, outdoor kitchen, fire feature, landscape improvements, lighting, irrigation, or another permanent feature, tell us before the concrete is installed.

We may need to think about sleeves, utilities, drainage, access, footings, elevations, or connections now.

Planning ahead can prevent you from paying to cut, remove, or rebuild work later.

You'll meet directly with CJR owner Colton Ray—not a salesperson.

Colton's hands-on concrete and construction experience allows him to evaluate more than the finished surface. He'll look at access, existing conditions, drainage, preparation, surrounding improvements, and how the concrete needs to function as part of the property.

He'll also talk with you about what you're hoping to accomplish, your priorities, and your targeted comfort zone of investment when appropriate.

You're discussing the project with someone who understands how it actually needs to be built.

Absolutely. Many newer Folsom homes have unfinished backyards, giving homeowners an opportunity to plan their outdoor space before permanent improvements are installed.

We can help you think through the placement of patios, walkways, steps, pool decking, drainage, landscape areas, and other features—even if you're not planning to build everything immediately.

It's also important to consider how the concrete will connect to the home, where elevations need to be established, and whether future structures or outdoor features will require utilities or foundations.

The decisions made during the initial concrete construction can affect what you're able to build later. We want to help homeowners make those decisions with the complete backyard in mind.
