Pool Builder in Grass Valley, CA

A Beautiful Pool Should Feel Right at Home in Its Surroundings.

CJR designs and builds custom swimming pools, spas, and complete outdoor spaces for Grass Valley homeowners.

THE CJR EXPERIENCE

There's Something Special About a Grass Valley Property.

The mature trees, rolling terrain, open spaces, and more natural surroundings are part of what makes so many Grass Valley properties special.

When homeowners choose to build a pool here, we don't believe the goal should be to make their property look like a backyard somewhere else.

The goal is to create something beautiful that belongs there.

That starts with understanding the property itself.

Where does the land naturally slope? Which trees and existing landscape features are worth preserving? How will the pool look from the home? Where does the sun reach throughout the day? What will construction access look like? How should the concrete, drainage, landscape, and gathering areas work together?

These aren't details we want to figure out after a design has already been finalized.

CJR brings experience across pool construction, concrete, drainage, grading, landscape, and complete outdoor living. That allows us to think through the entire project from the beginning, including the construction considerations that may not be immediately obvious.

We want your pool to feel like a natural part of the property—not something that was simply placed in the middle of it.

DESIGNED FOR GRASS VALLEY PROPERTIES

Work With the Property. Don't Fight What Makes It Special.

Grass Valley properties can offer opportunities that are harder to find in more densely developed neighborhoods.

Larger parcels, mature landscaping, wooded surroundings, open views, and natural elevation changes can provide an incredible setting for a custom pool.

But those same characteristics can also introduce construction considerations.

A sloped backyard may require careful planning around finished elevations, drainage, retaining, or access. An established property may have mature trees, existing improvements, underground utilities, or landscape features the homeowner wants to protect.

And even on a large property, the most appropriate location for a pool isn't always the most obvious one.

We take the time to understand those conditions before determining how the pool should fit into the property.

A thoughtfully designed pool should enhance the natural character of the land while creating a space your family will enjoy for years to come.

DESIGNED AROUND HOW YOU LIVE

A Pool That Fits Your Family and the Way You Enjoy Your Property.

Every family has a different reason for wanting a pool.

For some, it's about giving the kids and grandkids a place to spend summer afternoons. For others, it's a spa to enjoy after a long day, a peaceful water feature visible from the home, or a beautiful gathering space where friends and family can spend time together.

And on a larger Grass Valley property, there may be several possible locations or directions the design could take.

You don't need to have all of those decisions figured out before meeting with us.

We help you work through the possibilities.

Pool size and geometry, spa placement, Cabo shelves, steps, benches, water features, lighting, surrounding concrete, natural landscape transitions, and gathering areas are all considered in relation to the property and how you want to use it.

We also discuss your priorities and targeted comfort zone of investment so the design is being developed around a realistic understanding of the project.

A pool doesn't need to be oversized or filled with features to be exceptional.

It needs to be thoughtfully designed for the people who will use it and the property where it will be built.

BUILDING IN GRASS VALLEY

What We Consider Before Construction Begins

NATURAL TERRAIN + ELEVATION CHANGES

Some Grass Valley properties have slopes, uneven terrain, or elevation changes that influence where a pool can be placed and how the surrounding outdoor space should be developed. We consider finished pool elevations, retaining requirements, drainage, access, and how the pool will connect with patios, landscape, and other improvements. Rather than forcing a design onto the property, we look for opportunities to work with the existing terrain.

MATURE TREES + NATURAL SURROUNDINGS

Mature trees and established landscaping can be some of the most valuable features of a Grass Valley property. We consider tree locations, root zones, canopy coverage, surrounding grades, and how construction may affect existing vegetation. Not every tree or landscape feature can remain, but preservation should be part of the conversation before removal becomes the assumption.

EXCAVATION, ACCESS + DRAINAGE

A larger property doesn't necessarily mean construction will be straightforward. Rocky excavation conditions, limited equipment access, existing improvements, slopes, soil conditions, and drainage can all influence the project. We evaluate known site conditions early and explain where additional investigation or construction planning may be necessary. Good pre-construction planning is especially important when the property itself introduces variables that can affect how the pool needs to be built.

Concept to Completion

One Team. One Seamless Experience.

A complete backyard can involve far more than pool construction.

Concrete, drainage, landscaping, irrigation, lighting, structures, utilities, outdoor kitchens, retaining conditions, and finish work all need to come together in the correct sequence.

CJR provides one team to help plan and coordinate those moving pieces from the beginning.

That means fewer gaps between trades, clearer communication, and one company looking at the project as a whole instead of treating every element as an unrelated scope of work.

One Team. Complete Outdoor Spaces.

We design and build pools, concrete, hardscape, outdoor living, landscape, drainage, and more—so every element works together from the beginning.

Family-Owned. Owner-Operated.

CJR is a family-owned and owner-operated company. You work directly with owner Colton Ray from the initial consultation through construction—there isn't a salesperson between you and the person responsible for the work.

Construction-First Approach

Our background in concrete, excavation, pools, and complete outdoor construction helps us anticipate challenges, plan properly, and consider how each part of the project affects the next.

Clear Communication

We want our clients to understand what they are building, what is included, how the project will be approached, and who is accountable for bringing it together.

Experience With Properties That Require More Planning

Grass Valley properties can introduce considerations that go beyond the pool itself, including natural terrain, mature trees, slopes, drainage, excavation conditions, access, and larger areas of outdoor construction. Our experience across pools, concrete, grading, drainage, landscape, and outdoor living allows us to evaluate how these different parts of the project affect one another. We understand that building on a property with natural character requires more than choosing a beautiful design. It requires knowing how to thoughtfully construct it.

Quality You Can Count On

Our focus is thoughtful planning, proper preparation, quality craftsmanship, and doing the work correctly—not taking shortcuts to move a project along.

Colton and his team were EXCEPTIONAL in their work at our home. We had a big backyard of flat dirt and he helped turn it into a beautiful resort like feel.

Your Grass Valley Pool Questions Answered

The Details That Matter

The cost of a custom pool depends on much more than its size.

Pool geometry, spa features, equipment, interior finishes, excavation, access, engineering, drainage, decking, retaining, and surrounding outdoor construction can all affect the investment.

Grass Valley properties may also have site conditions that need additional consideration, including slopes, rock, existing improvements, or limited construction access.

We prefer to begin by understanding your property, priorities, and targeted comfort zone of investment before helping you determine what makes sense to design and build.

A realistic budget conversation should consider the complete scope—not just the finished pool.

Potentially, yes. A sloped property doesn't automatically prevent a pool from being built.

However, the slope may influence pool placement, finished elevations, structural engineering, retaining requirements, drainage, access, and the design of the surrounding hardscape.

In some situations, elevation changes can even become an opportunity to create a more interesting outdoor design.

The important part is evaluating the actual conditions before making promises about what can be built or how much it will cost.

We want the design to make sense for the terrain—not create unnecessary construction challenges by ignoring it.

Rock and difficult excavation conditions are important considerations on some foothill properties.

The type of material, its location, the equipment required, and how much additional work is necessary can all influence excavation costs and the construction schedule.

Not every underground condition can be confirmed before digging begins, which is why it's important to understand what excavation is included in your construction agreement and how unexpected conditions will be handled.

We believe homeowners should understand those possibilities before construction begins rather than being surprised by how the process works later.

Absolutely. For many Grass Valley properties, that's one of the most important parts of the design.

A pool doesn't need to look overly formal or disconnected from its surroundings to feel beautifully finished.

We can consider the existing trees, natural grades, landscape, views, stone and hardscape materials, planting, and how the pool will be seen from different areas of the property.

The goal is to create an outdoor space that feels thoughtfully developed while respecting the character of the land.

We want the finished project to look like it belongs on your property—not like it was copied from another backyard.

In many cases, preservation may be possible, but it depends on the specific trees and proposed construction.

We consider the location of the pool, excavation limits, root zones, canopy, equipment access, changes to surrounding grades, and the health and condition of the trees.

Some trees may require evaluation by a qualified arborist before decisions are made.

We don't believe mature landscaping should automatically be removed simply because a new pool is being considered.

Understanding what can reasonably be preserved is part of planning the project responsibly.

Not necessarily.

Acreage can provide more design flexibility, but it doesn't eliminate challenges involving access, terrain, drainage, utilities, excavation, or the distance between the pool and the home.

A pool positioned too far from the main gathering areas may also be less convenient to use than homeowners originally imagined.

We look at how the pool will relate to the home, outdoor living areas, views, sun exposure, and the rest of the property.

More land gives you more possibilities, but those possibilities still need thoughtful planning.

Yes.

CJR can coordinate much more than the swimming pool itself, including concrete patios and decking, drainage, grading, landscape and irrigation, pavilions, outdoor kitchens, fire features, water features, lighting, audio, turf, and other outdoor improvements.

This is especially valuable when a property requires multiple areas of construction to work together.

Pool elevations affect decking. Drainage affects landscape and hardscape. Structures may require foundations and utilities. Lighting and irrigation need to be considered before permanent improvements are installed.

Our experience across these scopes allows us to plan the complete project rather than leaving homeowners to coordinate disconnected pieces themselves.

Drainage needs to be considered before permanent improvements are constructed.

On a sloped property, water may naturally move through several areas before leaving the site. Adding a pool, concrete, retaining elements, or other hardscape can change that movement.

We consider existing drainage patterns, finished elevations, surrounding landscape, and how new construction may affect the property.

Depending on the conditions, additional drainage improvements or engineering may be necessary.

The goal is to address how water needs to move through the property as part of the overall construction plan.

Whenever possible, yes.

Even if you intend to build in phases, knowing the long-term direction can help avoid expensive changes later.

Future patios, pavilions, outdoor kitchens, landscape, lighting, irrigation, and drainage may affect decisions being made during pool construction.

Planning for those improvements doesn't mean you have to build everything immediately.

It means today's construction can support what you may want to add in the future.

Because similar-looking pools can represent very different scopes of work.

Equipment brands and specifications, finishes, excavation allowances, engineering, decking, drainage, electrical, access requirements, and surrounding construction can all affect the proposal.

One contractor may include work another has excluded or left as an allowance.

Before comparing the final prices, ask what is included, what is excluded, and how the contractor evaluated your specific property.

Compare scope to scope—not simply price to price.

Choosing a pool contractor involves more than comparing designs and the final price. You're trusting a company with a major construction project at your home, so it's important to understand who you're hiring and exactly what you're being quoted.

Look at the contractor's licensing, insurance, construction experience, completed work, warranties, communication process, and who will actually be responsible for managing your project once construction begins.

Ask detailed questions about the scope of work. What materials and equipment are being used? What brands, finishes, and specifications are included? What excavation is included? Are decking, drainage, electrical, permits, or other surrounding work part of the proposal? What is specifically excluded? Are there allowances that could change later?

Two proposals with similar-looking pools can represent very different scopes of work, materials, equipment, and levels of construction.

Also pay attention to how thoroughly the contractor evaluates your property before providing a proposal. Access, elevations, drainage, excavation conditions, utilities, existing improvements, and surrounding construction can all affect how the pool needs to be built.

Don't be afraid to ask questions. A good contractor should be willing to explain what you're paying for, what you're getting, and what you should expect throughout construction.

When comparing proposals, compare scope to scope—not simply price to price.

A pool is a significant investment and a permanent addition to your property. Choose a contractor you trust to communicate clearly, build responsibly, and stand behind the work long after the project is complete.

You'll meet directly with CJR owner Colton Ray—not a salesperson.

Colton will discuss your vision, evaluate the property, and consider the construction details that may affect the design and scope of work.

On properties with slopes, mature landscaping, access limitations, or other site-specific conditions, having someone with hands-on construction experience involved from the beginning is especially important.

We want you to understand what you're planning, what may be involved in building it, and what the next steps will look like before making a major investment in your property.
